Newman the Human:
The Process

Before Getting Started

Before this project, I did not have previous experience illustrating a children's book. I illustrated both digitally and traditionally for my own personal satisfaction in the after-hours of working full-time as a marketing designer, but never before for a project quite as fun as this.

The first step in illustrating Newman the Human was to read the story written by Andrea Meyer. It's important to have a clear understanding of the story's characters, setting, and overall tone in order to create illustrations that effectively convey the author's message.

Sketching

I created initial sketches to explore different styles, compositions, and character designs. These sketches served as a starting point for discussion with the author or publisher for direction. I collaborated closely with the author to refine the illustrations and make sure they align with the vision for the book.

The Fun Part

After creating initial sketches and refining the illustrations, I adapted the illustrations into high-quality digital art using Adobe Photoshop. I also designed the fonts used and the layouts of each page. I kept the technical requirements of the book's production in mind when determining the size and resolution and special printing considerations.

Collaboration

Throughout the process, I communicated regularly with the author to ensure the illustration met their expectations and the overall vision for the book. Revisions and changes are all made along the way. We used the Amazon self-publishing tool to upload the pages and send to print.

Reception

We had many purchases the first month! The organization the author and I worked for full-time graciously purchased 1,000 copies to donate to schools in our areas. The reviews written by our readers were so enlightening to read. The final product is a beautiful and engaging book that captures the imagination of young readers and encourages diversity. You may find the book on Amazon
